A bilum is deeply entwined with every social and cultural aspect of Papua New Guinea’s identity. Each bilum is unique and symbolic, telling the story of the real people and communities of PNG. Traditionally they were used to transport goods and babies. So they are very strong and durable. They are made from 100% natural materials and are therefore ethically made in an artisanal way. Making each bilum is a time consuming process – picking, beating, drying, turning, coloring and weaving. It can take 4 to 8 weeks to make 1 bag or bilum. When you buy a bag from Bek & Meri, you are assured of a unique, sustainable item and you support the women and mothers of PNG.
